Digital Boarding Pass Guide
Wallet, app, screenshot, PDF - what works at security and what doesn't. Backup strategies that never fail.
Mobile boarding passes work almost everywhere now, but they still fail at the wrong moments. A little redundancy in your setup prevents the small crises that come from a dead phone.
The formats that work
Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes are scanned reliably at nearly all major airports. Airline apps show the same barcode - both work.
A PDF or email attachment works but is less reliable - screen glare, older scanners, and older barcode formats sometimes fail. A screenshot works everywhere as a fallback.
Where you still need paper
A few smaller regional airports and some US commuter flights still require paper. When flying into or out of an unfamiliar small airport, print as a backup.
Some countries - India, parts of Southeast Asia - require a printed boarding pass at security entry. Rules there change fast, so check the airport website.
Backup strategy
Screenshot your boarding pass immediately after check-in and save it to your photo library. Add the pass to your Wallet. Download the airline app.
For international trips, bring a portable charger. A dead phone at the gate is the number one reason people miss digital boarding.

Can I share a boarding pass with a family member's phone?
Yes on most airlines - forward the email or airline app pass, or airdrop the wallet card.
What if my name doesn't match the barcode?
Return to the check-in counter. Boarding pass reissue is free if the airline made the error.
