Airport Check-in Explained
Online, mobile, kiosk, or counter - which check-in option makes sense for your flight and how early to arrive.
Check-in is where the airline confirms you are on the flight and issues a boarding pass. It sounds simple, but the process differs meaningfully between airlines and airports, and getting it wrong can mean losing your seat.
When check-in opens and closes
Most airlines open online check-in 24 to 48 hours before departure. Airport check-in usually opens 3 to 4 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one.
Cut-off times are strict. British Airways closes bag drop 45 minutes before short-haul departures and 60 minutes before long-haul. Miss it by a minute and you are on the next flight.
Online, mobile, kiosk, or counter
Online check-in through the airline website is the default for most travellers. You get a mobile or printed boarding pass and skip the counter unless you have bags to drop.
Kiosks in the terminal are useful if you couldn't check in online - for example, some countries require passport verification at a counter. The old fashioned counter is required for oversize baggage, unaccompanied minors, and certain visa checks.
How early to arrive
General rule - 2 hours for domestic, 3 hours for international. Major hubs at peak time (Heathrow at 06:00, JFK at 17:00) can need 3.5 hours if you are checking bags.
If you have TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or an equivalent trusted traveller program, you can shave 20 to 40 minutes off security waits.

Usually yes if it's on the same ticket. Separate tickets need separate check-in.
Do I need to print my boarding pass?
No, most airports scan mobile boarding passes. A few smaller airports and some US regional flights still require paper.
