Dubai
Dubai is efficient, hot, and built for visitors. The metro connects the airport, downtown, and the marina, and taxis are cheap. Most travellers use it as a stopover between Europe and Asia.
Entry requirements
US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Australian visitors receive a free 30 or 90 day visa on arrival depending on nationality. Passport must be valid six months.
Transportation
Dubai Metro runs from Terminal 1 and 3 directly to downtown and the marina, about 8 AED to central stops. Taxis from the airport are metered and reliable. Careem and Uber both operate.
Currency
UAE Dirham. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Tipping 10 percent is normal in restaurants.
Airports
Dubai International (DXB) is one of the world's busiest hubs. Al Maktoum (DWC) handles some low cost and cargo.
Practical tips
- Between June and September, plan indoor activities from 11:00 to 17:00 - temperatures often exceed 42 C.
- Alcohol is served in licensed hotel restaurants and bars, not in supermarkets.
- Fridays and Saturdays are the weekend. Government offices close but malls stay open.
Common traveller mistakes
- Wearing shorts or sleeveless tops in the older Deira and Bur Dubai areas.
- Assuming public displays of affection are acceptable - they are technically illegal.
